Denial is the way to keep yourself from humiliation and from pity.

If you deny and/or downplay your feelings then nobody has to know how much it hurts and nobody has to try to make it better.

boy likes girl and girl likes boy. 

Girl said that boy had given her his whole heart and she had only given him a fragment. The part she knew to be a lie was on her end, she knew he had captured more than just a mere fragment but she was trying to save face and prevent the pain she could foresee on the horizon. The part he knew to be a lie was on his end, she only entertained a fraction of his heart and soul but she deluded herself into thinking she was the only one he loved. 

They both thought that niether would be the wiser to their lie, but lies have a very funny way of coming out.
